Evangelical Church of Augsburg Confession: We do not know where exactly in Žilina took the evangelical worship place at the beginning of Protestantism. Only within the period of the Žilina synod and Juraj Thurzo, the worship took place in the Church of the Holy Trinity (today´s cathedral church). During the whole 17th century the worship in this church was performed once by Protestants and once by Catholics, according to their power and the political situation. The end of the 17th century brought itself a violent Catholicism and rejection of the protestant religion. The Protestants definitely lost the church, thus they built a wooden chapel beyond the city borders of that period - on today´s old cemetery. When they got the church again for a while, the chapel was dismantled. In 1709 they already built a second wooden church, but this one was dismantled again in 1719. From those times till the end of the 19th century, they did not virtually have a house of prayer. One of the reasons was a drastic and progressive decrease in number of Protestants in the town, they even almost disappeared.
At the end of the 19th century the number of Protestants increased, but they still did not have their own church and were having their meetings at different places. In 1903 – 1904 they built their own house of prayer beyond the city borders. It served as a Centre of Protestants in Žilina for many years. A significant change occurred in 1921, when a new minister, Fedor Ruppeldt, came to the town. Shortly after he came, he had an idea to build up a new and mainly bigger church that would more correspond with modern period and especially to an increasing number of Protestants in the town. Collections started to be made, gifts were given, and USA also helped. Negotiations with the town about the most suitable lands for the construction of the new church started in 1930. Later on they chose the lands on Šefranica with purpose to build the church and parish as well. In 1934 they made an anonymous architectural tender won by architectural proposal of Milan Harminec. Construction administration was launched in May 1935. The new church shall be constructed in spirit of the modern functionalist architecture. Lack of financial funds led to the project changes. The parish building was separated in order to build it individually and the church changed its layout and orientation.
The corner-stone was laid on 15 September. Construction works began a little earlier, because archaeological research was necessary to do. The research showed that important archaeological discoveries were made. The works finished on 10 October 1936. The tower of the church was a place for three bells. Right the next day, their consecration took place there. In 1938 to 1939, there was constructed a new parish. The old building (current glazier´s in Kuzmany´s street) stopped serving its purpose.
