JUDr. Alexander Kováč (born on 31 January 1880) was a well-known advocate from Žilina. He opened his advocate’s office in 1910, at the age of 29, in what was then Lajos Kossúth Street – today Národná Street. In 1928 the Kováč family acquired a plot in then Šrobárov Sad (today Sad SNP) next to hotel Astória, which had been under construction at that period. Architects Fridrich Weiwurm and Ignác Vécsei who were working together in a well-known atelier in Bratislava, prepared two designs for a department store and a residential building with offices for the advocate activities. While the exterior look of the house was in fact identical in both designs and differed only in the layout of windows, the second design – the one that was finally used – included material changes – it included a cellar under the building, an office was added to shops originally planned on the first floor, and the original building was expanded, too. On the second floor there was one office and private rooms for the family members, a kitchen and a dining room. On the third floor there were bedrooms for children, the master’s bedroom and room for a servant and attic, as well as an entrance into a roofed terrace and another open terrace.
It was not the only order for Weiwurm and Vécsei from Žilina. Villa Ellenbogen at today M. R. Štefánika Street No. 11 was built in 1927 according to their design. In the past a pulmonary department of the District Institute of National Health was in the building. The building was reconstructed and another floor was added in 2008. In 1930 they designed Považská agrárna a priemyselná banka (Považská Agrarian and Industrial Bank) in Žilina at what is today Mariánske Square No. 5, which was demolished in 1996 and replaced by a new polyfunctional building. Also Villa of Dr. Neumann at the corner of Vojtecha Tvrdého Street and Jána Milca Street was built according to their design. Today the building is reconstructed and it is the seat of a private firm.
Weinwurm and Vécsei designed a plain roof for the house of JUDr. Kováč for the first time; what makes this functionalistic building unique and adds special value. The construction began in October 1928 and it was completed on 8 October 1929. Alexander Kováč and his wife Angela, born as Goldsteinová and Forderberg family lived in the house in 1938. After the Second World War the family of MUDr. Alexander Vozár, a well-known physician and long-term consultant of the ophthalmology department in Žilina Hospital lived in the house. The house was nationalized in 1962 but continued to be used for residential and business purposes. The first floor had been used for many years as a sport shop; on the second floor there was a three room flat, and on the third floor there was a two-room flat with terraces. In spite of the restitution in 1990, the first floor was still used for commercial purposes.
