The first known owner was the noble Stráňavský family in the 18th century. Several of Žilina’s appointed mayors came from this family. The first was Štefan in 1619. In 1751 the house became the property of Jozef Hauer and his wife. They bought it for 823 gold coins. He was director of the salt warehouse in Žilina. He had lived in the house since 1745, but had just rented part of it. Although he was director of the well-known salt warehouse, his son Karol Hauer, who studied geometry, is better known, having made his mark on Žilina’s history when he drew the oldest known picture of Žilina rínok [marketplace] in 1779. Thanks to him, we have a relatively accurate idea of what Marianske Square looked like in the late 18th century. This picture is an invaluable historical document for those seeking knowledge on the architecture of the town. According to Director of the State Archives in Žilina Mgr. Peter Štanský, after the death of Jozef Hauer, his second wife moved away from Žilina and in 1790 sold the house to Jozef Farko, a Žilina organist and teacher, who was married to Mária Tvrdá. The building then changed owners frequently. A little later, the building belonged to the well-known Bittšanský family. In 1932 the house was divided into two. In 1941 the Čapčík family acquired part of the building. They owned it until nationalization in 1961. The house has an original cellar, a Gothic–Renaissance basement, a Classical ground floor and first floor. The house was badly damaged and left to rot under socialism. Since 1993 it has undergone gradual restoration.
