33 – The Marketplace

The new marketplace with its passage created a new connection linking the town core and the "Market" Square. The two-storey building has a skeleton structure, and its facade is lined with ceramic bricks. Typical architectural details of this building are round windows and arched glass-concrete walls. Curve and arch have found their practical architectural application by architects Mikuláš Šesták and Ferdinand Čapka.
The passage was conceived as an atrium with rounded corners, which gives that space its elegance. One enters through large lockable gates. On one side, on the ground, a series of small shops were built. On the other side were sheltered vending stalls, where vegetables from the "Bulgarians" were sold. The floor was conceived as a free outdoor vending area for domestic fowl, animals and berries. The marketplace is one of the distinctive and valuable buildings in Žilina.
