House of flats SKELET: Skelet flats were built between 2004 and 2005 in the centre of the town on the edge of the conservation area of the historical town of Žilina on land at the corner of Dolný val, Kalinčiakova and Na Priekope streets, where there was the structure – the concrete framework – of an unfinished building. The original design had been drawn up in keeping with the regulations on building height and angle of the time. The new five-storey building with a set-back top floor and flat roof was the result of a search for a new approach to how to fit modern contemporary architecture into historical surroundings. The designer of the SKELET building, Ing. arch. Ľubica Koreňová, won the two highest Slovak awards for architecture in 2006.
Dušan Jurkovič Prize: This longest-running prestigious architectural prize has been awarded since 1964, and nominations have been assessed by an international jury since 1999. The prize is awarded by the Slovak Architects’ Society to the designer or team for work that contributes to raising the standard and prestige of architecture in Slovakia.
Slovak Chamber of Architects Prize for CE•ZA•AR architecture: This prize awards outstanding professional performance – producing an architectural work of art – which significantly enhances Slovak culture.
The Dušan Jurkovič Prize panel of judges stated: "This building has won over the panel with the way in which it blends completely into the area. It has been very precisely conceptualised and brought into being - from urban planning down to the very last detail. The relief work and the way the fine colouring gracefully works its way deep into the façade is particularly attractive. This piece of architecture consitutes part of the town by contrasting and blending into the historical environment of the heart of Žilina. The graphic design work and the materials used bring the building closer to the people. The designer’s proposal fits perfectly with the unused concrete framework."
Ing. arch. Ľubica Koreňová lives and works at Žilina-studio. We recommend her website, www.korenova.sk, to all those interested in her work (Photos by: L Kupkovič, M Liskova, Ľ Koreňová).
