This house built in the historicist style belonged to the Babušek family. From 1894 – 1904 here lived and worked Dr. Dušan Petrovič Makovický, the Slovak national revivalist and the personal physician of Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy – the famous Russian writer. Native of Ružomberok, Dr. Makovický was very popular in Žilina because he treated poor patients for free and often bought them drugs with his own money.
From 1905 to 1919, Dr. Ivan Hálek, the Czech physician and humanist, lived in Babušek´s house. He replaced a general practitioner in Žilina named Dr. Makovický. At the end of 1918 and at the beginning of 1919, when Žilina was temporarily the capital of Slovakia, Dr. Vavro Šrobár, then the Minister with full powers to govern Slovakia, lived in Babušek´s House, in the flat of Dr. Ivan Hálek.
At present, the house is a seat of the Regional Cultural Centre in Žilina and Krajská Observatory in Žilina.
