Forest Restaurant Paľova búda in local part Bôrik – Chrastie had been very popular in the past. Stanislav Bresciani, an architect from nearby Kunerád, designed it in 1925 for Pavol Folkmann, a hotel owner from Žilina. He designed it as a two-floor wooden building in the Swiss style with two small towers. Thanks to its unique style the building became a popular in the town, and a popular restaurant of Žilina inhabitants as well. The building is still known as “Paľova búda” among the people, in spite of the fact that it is not used for its original purposes anymore.
In the past, Paľova búda was rather far from Žilina and so the number of customers kept decreasing. The operation was not profitable anymore, the building was unsalable and therefore in 1938 Folkmann gifted Paľova búda to a female religious order - the Congregation of the Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius (they came in 1933 from Morava to Považské Podhradie). They opened an institute taking care of girls with mental diseases. All female religious orders were cancelled in 1950 and so the building was acquired by the Ministry of Health. A social institute for mentally ill people was then opened. Later, the social institute moved to the village of Turie in 1980, and Paľova búda was acquired by the University of Transport and Communication in Žilina. The university shifted a part of its military department to Paľova búda and after 1990 the building started to be used for its original purpose – a tavern and a café for students - for several years.
In 1996 the building was returned in restitution to the Congregation of the Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius that restored its activities in Slovakia after 1989. At the beginning of 1998 the building was let to the newly established University Pastoral Centre at University of Žilina (UPeCe) for a long period for the price of necessary repairs. The building was reconstructed by the believers - teachers, students and Žilina inhabitants - under the supervision of then administrator ThLic. (First Degree of Catholic Theology) Ladislav Stromček.
The mission of the Centre is to help various Christian student formations. It also serves educational purposes; it is used for consultations, workshops, courses and other activities. St. Paul is the patron of UPeCe.
The University Pastoral Centre at University of Žilina (UPeCe Žilina) has its seat in the building at present. UPeCe is administered by the Roman-Catholic Church. It is the place where students can share their belief, meet together, come to mass or spend their leisure time. All the students (i.e. not only the believers) can meet there, spend their leisure time, play games, and study in a study room, which is very appreciated by the students as it is often quieter than student rooms in a dorm. Various lectures are held in Paľova búda – social, cultural, spiritual, lectures on various relationship topics, human identity, planned parenthood, etc. The lectures and other leisure activities are organized by the university association Šanca o.z. that also has its seat in the building.
Students and teachers enjoy the Student Café. There they can spend time between their school blocks. The area offers some opportunities for sport – in particular volleyball and hockey-ball. In warmer months the sport activities are often accompanied by barbecue and sitting by a fire. Students can have fun without alcohol. The centre welcomes all the students.
