The Chapel of the Virgin Mary of the Seven Sorrows is situated at the edge of the town districts of Vlčince and Solinky near the grounds of Žilina University in Veľký Diel. It was built on woodland belonging to the town of Žilina. Today it is part of the town recreation zone Lesopark Chrasť which offers visitors both sporting facilities and relaxation and spiritual regeneration. The chapel and recreation zone are at present fenced in together.
The then young architect František Eduard Bednárik (11th September 1902, Bystrice pod Hostýnom – 16th February 1960, Žilina), originally from Moravia, designed his own chapel in 1928. After his arrival in Žilina in 1925 he designed and built using his own construction company many important buildings, some of them with the help of his architect brother-in-law Mr. Čapek, including the station building, power stations and many others. He was an officially appointed expert, the owner of the Dubná skala quarry near Vrútky and the director of the Varín asphalt exploitation, which was the quarry near the Strečno railway station, where dolomite gravel with an asphalt aggregate was extracted.
In the eighteenth century, Žilina already had a chapel in the Chrasť area, built with the financial support of the Žilina burgher, Makker. It can be seen on the map of Žilina dating from 1747. The pilgrimage route to Višňové led from here, a place of pilgrimage for Catholics for over 300 years. For this reason believers asked the Roman Catholic church to renovate the chapel so that it might serve for prayer and contemplation during excursions from the town into the then untouched wooded countryside. In 1928, after a charity collection among the faithful, the then priest Tomáš Ružička asked the architect František Bednárik to design a simple chapel, which the architect did on July 1st 1928. The design of the chapel included four small steps for access. The chapel itself has an open entrance area and an inside area closed by a door. The marble statue of the Virgin May of the Seven Sorrows was a gift from the widow Mrs Chládecká.
The chapel was not only used for occasional prayers by visitors to the wooded park, but also for weddings. After the war in particular, many young couples were married here, because numerous poorer members of society did not have the means to afford a “better” wedding in white, so the Church allowed them to marry outside town. After 1949 the chapel was no longer used for these purposes and fell gradually into disrepair. After the changes in 1990, it came once more to the attention of the church and believers, and the then parish of Žilina had it renovated in 1991. It was reopened on September 15th 1991 and the first holy mass celebrated by the administrator of the parish of Žilina and the district deacon, br. Jordán Jozef Noga, OP was served here. The railway brass band took part in the celebrations. Today, the chapel belongs to the parish of Vlčince.
