In 1927 on the corner of Bernolákova and Daniela Dlabača streets a commercial and residential three-storey semi-detached building was built in functionalist style, which is now a major landmark in the town. It is the only building to have remained following the redevelopment of Hviezdoslavova and Bernolákova streets during construction of the bus station in 1973, when Bernolákova Street was destroyed.
The semi-detached house was built by Ing. A. Windholz according to a design proposed in March 1927 by the Žilina-based architect Jozef Zweigenthal for the Porges’ brothers. Construction began on 13 April 1927. The building was originally designed as a three-storey building and on 9 August 1927 the owners received planning permission to extend it by one floor. Construction was completed on 10 November 1927. Adolf Porges and his wife Mária, née Tyrolerová, owned the house accessed from Bernolákova Street 2. His brother Karol Porges and his wife Regina owned the other part of the house accessed from Daniela Dlabača Street 28.
Part of the house accessed from former Bernolákova Street contained a basement with the caretaker’s quarters, a central heating boiler, a laundry, a commercial cellar and a domestic cellar. On the ground floor there were commercial premises and an office. On the first floor there was an apartment comprising a hall, four rooms, a kitchen, a maid’s room, a bathroom and a toilet. The rooms on the second floor followed the same layout and there was also a balcony. Part of the attic also featured a dwelling space. On the ground floor brothers Adolf and Karol Porges ran their cotton, linen and woollen goods wholesaler’s from the commercial premises. The warehouse was located in the commercial cellar.
The house was later bought by Michael Adler and his wife Helena, and she was the owner until nationalisation in 1950. In 1970, the corporate headquarters of Domestic Utensils was located here. It is currently a multi-purpose building with a COOP Jednota Žilina supermarket located on the ground floor. The other part of the house at Daniela Dlabača Street 28 was residential, consisting of three four-room apartments, two two-room apartments, a one-room attic apartment and in the basement there was a caretaker’s apartment, laundry and the cellars. Following the demise of the Porges brothers’ company, Vojtech Adler bought the house and in 1937 sold it for 500,000 Czech crowns to Michal Freller and his wife Selma, a daughter of a well-known Žilina hotelier called Mark Reich. After nationalisation the building remained a residential house. It is now a multi-purpose building.
